Quick answer
What is AMD EPYC 4004, and is it just a Ryzen in a server?
AMD EPYC 4004 is AMD's entry server line for socket AM5, launched on 21 May 2024. It has 4 to 16 Zen 4 cores, two DDR5-5200 channels, 28 PCIe 5.0 lanes and ECC memory. Each model matches a Ryzen 7000 chip in cores, clocks, cache and TDP, so yes: it is a Ryzen, validated for servers. Lumenfer rents the AMD EPYC 4244P for $91.65, no KYC, in crypto.
Which Ryzen matches each EPYC 4004 and 4005 model?
Pairs with identical cores, base clock, boost clock, L3 cache and default TDP on AMD's product pages, read on 1 November 2026.
| EPYC model | Ryzen with the same figures | Generation | Cores | Base / boost | L3 cache | TDP |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| EPYC 4244P | Ryzen 5 7600 | Zen 4 | 6 | 3.8 / 5.1 GHz | 32 MB | 65 W |
| EPYC 4464P | Ryzen 9 7900 | Zen 4 | 12 | 3.7 / 5.4 GHz | 64 MB | 65 W |
| EPYC 4564P | Ryzen 9 7950X | Zen 4 | 16 | 4.5 / 5.7 GHz | 64 MB | 170 W |
| EPYC 4584PX | Ryzen 9 7950X3D | Zen 4 | 16 | 4.2 / 5.7 GHz | 128 MB | 120 W |
| EPYC 4565P | Ryzen 9 9950X | Zen 5 | 16 | 4.3 / 5.7 GHz | 64 MB | 170 W |
| EPYC 4585PX | Ryzen 9 9950X3D | Zen 5 | 16 | 4.3 / 5.7 GHz | 128 MB | 170 W |
EPYC 4464P figures from AMD's EPYC 4004 data sheet (May 2024). Phoronix's launch review also calls the 4564P the equivalent of the 7950X and the 4584PX that of the 7950X3D.
What does EPYC add on top of the Ryzen silicon?
Server features around the chip, not inside the cores. AMD's EPYC 4004 data sheet and selection guide list five:
| Feature | Ryzen 7000 / 9000 | EPYC 4004 / 4005 |
|---|---|---|
| ECC memory | "Yes (Requires mobo support)" | Listed for the series |
| Memory capacity | 128 GB listed for the 7950X, 256 GB for the 9950X | Up to 192 GB for each series |
| Platform | Desktop AM5 boards | AM5 Type 2 form factor with server management |
| Operating systems | Windows 10 and 11, RHEL, Ubuntu (OS support list) | Tested and validated: Windows Server 2022, RHEL 9.3 and 9.4, SLES 15 SP5, Ubuntu 22.04 |
| Lifecycle | Not stated on the product page | Multi-year CPU lifecycle support |
Phoronix's launch review of 21 May 2024 adds the board side. EPYC 4004 servers ship with a BMC, software RAID, server OS certifications and ECC support. AMD also told Phoronix that "Ryzen for servers" boards with ECC would keep coming.
EPYC 4004 is not a faster Ryzen; it is the same Ryzen with server credentials attached: ECC, a BMC-ready platform and validated operating systems.
Is an EPYC 4004 faster than the matching Ryzen?
No. With identical cores, clocks and cache, the two perform alike, and the board, memory and cooling decide the rest. AMD even priced them alike: Phoronix noted that the 4564P's $699 list price matched the 7950X's.
Identical silicon, identical list price: the EPYC 4564P and Ryzen 9 7950X differ in platform, not in speed.
AMD positions EPYC 4004 against Intel's entry Xeon, not against Ryzen. Its launch release claims 1.8 times the performance per CPU dollar of a Xeon E-2488 for the 4564P, by AMD's own test.
Phoronix measured that matchup itself on launch day. The Xeon E-2488 has 8 cores, DDR5-4800 and no AVX-512, while EPYC 4004 runs DDR5-5200 and supports AVX-512. Even the 8-core EPYC 4344P and 4364P beat it in Phoronix's rendering tests.
What is EPYC 4005, the Zen 5 follow-up?
EPYC 4005 is the same idea on Ryzen 9000 silicon, launched on 13 May 2025. AMD lists 6 to 16 Zen 5 cores, DDR5-5600 and 28 PCIe 5.0 lanes. One part stands out: the EPYC 4545P puts 16 cores in a 65 W TDP, against 170 W for the Ryzen 9 9950X.
Phoronix tested the 4565P and 4585PX on a Supermicro H13SAE-MF board with 2 × 32 GB ECC DDR5 (Ubuntu 25.04, Linux 6.14, GCC 14.2). Over more than 200 benchmarks, the 4565P was 20% faster than the 4564P and the 4585PX 25% faster than the 4584PX. The 4585PX was 88% faster than Intel's 8-core Xeon 6369P.

Monthly billing, list prices of 30 October 2026, EUR amounts at 1 EUR = 1.1172 USD (ECB, 30 October 2026). MonoVM and 1Gbits route some crypto payments through Cryptomus/Heleket, under UK sanctions since 8 October 2026. MonoVM's terms quote 5 to 10 business days to deliver a dedicated server.
Lumen 6 comes with 2 × 960 GB NVMe, against 2 × 480 GB on the two Canadian 4244P offers. It sits 25% under its named reference, MonoVM's “AMD Epyc 4244p” at $122.20. All plans and terms are on how much a Lumenfer bare-metal server costs.
Entry servers are where old chips hide. Of the 34 bare-metal sellers Lumenfer surveyed on 30 October 2026, 27 priced their lowest offer on a processor from before 2018. An EPYC 4244P replaces exactly that kind of box.
Should I rent an EPYC 4004 or a Ryzen?
Rent the EPYC when ECC must be guaranteed, and the Ryzen when you want the biggest AM5 core count or memory at the best price.
- Lumen 6: AMD EPYC 4244P, 6 cores / 12 threads, 32 GB DDR5 ECC. For web apps, small databases, DNS and monitoring.
- Lumen 8: AMD Ryzen 7 9700X, 8 cores / 16 threads, 64 GB DDR5. More cores and memory, without ECC.
- Lumen 16: AMD Ryzen 9 9950X, 16 cores / 32 threads, 128 GB DDR5. The fastest AM5 box Lumenfer rents; see renting a Ryzen 9 9950X.
Why ECC matters, and when it does not, is in whether you need ECC RAM on a rented server. The wider CPU map is in the best CPU for a rented dedicated server.
EPYC 4004 and Ryzen: FAQ
Does EPYC 4004 support ECC memory?
Yes. AMD's EPYC selection guide lists ECC memory for the 4004 and 4005 series. On Ryzen, AMD makes ECC depend on the motherboard. Lumen 6 lists 32 GB DDR5 ECC.
Does EPYC 4004 have AVX-512?
Yes. Phoronix confirms AVX-512 on the EPYC 4004 series, which uses Zen 4 cores like the Ryzen 7000. Phoronix credits the Zen 5 EPYC 4005 series with the full 512-bit AVX-512 data path.
Can EPYC 4004 run in a two-socket server?
No. AMD lists every EPYC 4004 and 4005 model as 1P, single socket only. For two sockets and 12 memory channels per socket you need SP5 EPYC, covered in renting an EPYC 9004 or 9005 server.
How much memory can an EPYC 4004 server hold?
Up to 192 GB of DDR5, by AMD's selection guide, on two channels. AMD's data sheet rates DDR5-5200 with one DIMM per channel.
Does Lumenfer's EPYC plan come with IPMI?
No. There is no IPMI or KVM-over-IP console for customers: you request reboots and reinstalls in the dashboard and the team performs them. The board may have a BMC, but customers do not get access to it.
